Frequently Asked Questions

Online therapy has numerous advantages. For one, it’s convenient. Online therapy fits right into your schedule, and you don’t have to worry about commuting to an office or sitting in a waiting room. With Northern Virginia traffic, this is a huge plus! It’s also accessible for those with physical limitations, those lacking transportation, or living in more rural areas. Many clients prefer the discrete nature of being able to log in for sessions wherever they want.

Just as some people don’t ‘fit’ together well, not all therapist-client relationships will be a good ‘fit.’ If you feel comfortable with your therapist then your comfort level will probably continue to grow. If you don’t feel comfortable, it is more than okay for you to continue your search. Remember, this is YOUR therapy!

Yes! ‘Becoming You’ implies there is always room for growth. Therapy allows you to increase insight about your behaviors and relationships. There’s nothing like that ‘A-ha’ moment or ‘I’ve never thought of it that way….’

This is definitely a frequently asked question for which there is no simple answer. Those looking for a more solution-based approach will spend less time utilizing therapy but most people I see are seeking more deep understanding and working on complex issues with mood, relationships, and overall function. More complex situations will require more time.

Yes, with a few exceptions.

According to the privacy and confidentiality section of the APA’s ethical code of conduct for therapists, there are four general situations which are exempt from confidentiality:

  • The client is an imminent and violent threat towards themselves or others
  • There is a billing situation which requires a condoned disclosure
  • Sharing information is necessary to facilitate client care across multiple providers
  • Sharing information is necessary to treat the client

Of these situations, only the first obligates therapists to break confidentiality. The limits of confidentiality in counseling stop at the gate whenever clients express the intent to harm themselves or others.
